By Sylvia Hubilla
With heart heavy, body weary,
I step out …for the last time.
The metal gate clang shut
on memories left behind.
I look up at the weeping sky,
crying for me because
my tears would not come,
even as I quietly said goodbye.
I welcome the rain, now pouring,
like some baptism, washing
away the years and tears, soaking
my hair, now gray.
(This poem will be part of Sylvia Hubilla’s upcoming book on poetry. She is an English teacher by profession and now lives with her children and grandchildren in Austin, Texas)
