Reiki: The Body Naturally Heals Itself

By Marivir R. Montebon

New York City — At the Zen Medica health store in this city’s upper west side, the man who takes care of a steady stream of customers is a holistic health practitioner.

Standing by the cash register, Dragos Dobrescu, tall and friendly, greets people who come in with a smile and attends to their queries swiftly.

That’s one good thing about Zen Medica, customers are given what they ask for, as well as insights on holistic health.

Dragos came into the fold of Zen Medica, owned and managed by the indomitable entrepreneur Chowie Mok, for more than a year as a specialist in Reiki, natural nutrition, and herbal medicine.

“I will be a holistic health practitioner forever. That’s my calling,” he said.

Our interview was snappy and intermittently halted by customers, a sure sign that business is doing great.

Asked how he came into natural nutrition and holistic healing, Dragos said he was sick sometime in 1998, a few years after he came to the US from France, to study micro chips design and development.

When he got sick, he realized he had to engage in natural medicine in order to be truly healed. He went into absolute natural nutrition and medicine, and shamanism. “I gained back my life. I have become a believer of holistic health. After that, there was no turning back. I became a health practitioner myself,” he said.

Even his cat, Simba, lives a healthy lifestyle with him and his wife, Martine, thriving on wet food and organic health supplements.

Aside from serving clients at Zen Medica, Dragos also runs his own health practice on Madison Avenue where he practices Reiki, herbal medicine, meditation, and flower and oil essences.

Being an advocate of holistic health myself, I became interested in Reiki, an ancient Buddhist and Japanese health practice which rebalances the energies of the body. Much of our conversation revolved on this modality.

“In Reiki, I am not healing the person. I am just facilitating the healing, because the body heals itself,” Dragos quips.

Reiki, literally meaning God’s wisdom (rei) and energy life force (ki) works best with meditation and healthy nutrition.

It is administered by laying on hands on the person’s body who is in a sleep or meditative state in order to rebalance his/her energies. Reiki is based on the notion that life is created by an unseen energy force which has to be rebalanced and healed when necessary.

Dragos has served clients from all ages, including children, and is fulfilled to have become part of their healthy transformation.

“People’s healing are paced on how they get in tune with proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle. Some are healed faster depending on one’s lifestyle. I just coach and educate, but healing mainly depends on personal will.”
