Woodside, Queens — As young Filipino basketball enthusiasts in Queens shoot that basketball in fun games at the Martin Luther King gym, donations pour to build navigational boats for school children through the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation in Zamboanga.
The OSM! online magazine gives a thumbs up to this community sports event initiated by the Coloso Oco Marte Offices as a way to engage the youth in healthy and safe lifestyles. The 2014 Basketball Tournament kicked off as a fund raiser (for the building of boats for school children) in mid-September and will have its final match on October 5, 2014.
Evangeline Oco, one of the organizers of the event, said her group wanted to make sense of the overflowing energy of the youth into something worthwhile, while assuring the safety of school children in riverine and coastal areas of the Philippines. (Visit http://www.yellowboat.org/)
Aside from basketball, OSM! continues to support the education of young children in Cebu by sending books to select schools in the cities of Mandaue and Cebu and the town of Medellin. Melissa Alviar and Carla Lopez Mayol have recently donated books for the children.
