New York – For the effort, Filipinos can pat their backs this time.
The NYC Council voted Wednesday the co-naming of the southwest corner of Roosevelt Avenue on 70th Street to Little Manila Avenue which residential and business enclave of Filipinos in Queens.
The legislation was sponsored by Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer of the Parks and Recreation committee.
Jaclyn Reyes, artist and advocate of the Little Manila movement was ecstatic. “Really happy to see it finally happen. There is still work to be done first, but we will take this win as an important acknowledgment of the Filipino community from the City of New York,” Reyes told OSM!.
The advocate groups will officially meet with representative Julie Won and the Department of Transportation.
Certainly, a major celebration is in the offing. Queens, the largest and most diverse borough of New York, is home to majority of Filipinos in the empire state.#
