The Mount Vernon Public Library Foundation will hold its Light the Night with Literacy Gala to celebrate the Mount Vernon Public Library and raise funds for the Children’s Library on August 26, Wednesday, Shanna Marie Wallace, public relations director for the foundation said.
The donation is $125 per person or $1000 for a table of 10 at the VIP Country Club in 600 Davenport Avenue, New Rochelle, NY 10805 which includes cocktails, dinner, dancing, and auction.
The MVPL has been serving the community for over 160 years, the largest library in Westchester County and the sixth largest library within New York State. Mount Vernon has a rich literary tradition, with local authors like E.B. White (Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little), Art Buchwald (I’ll Always have Paris), Dick Clark (Dick Clark’s American Bandstand), David Chase (The Sopranos), and Jonathan Larson (Rent the Musical). This legacy continues to this day, as one of this year’s honorees is Kenneth C. Davis (Don’t Know Much About History), a historian and best selling-author from Westchester.
Andrew Carnegie donated $50,000 for the construction of building in 1904 and in 2004, the Foundation was incorporated by a group of motivated and concerned neighborhood leaders who focused their energy and attention on providing private support to build an outstanding library system in Mount Vernon.
The foundation is committed to strengthening the city by supporting excellence in the Mount Vernon Public Library system, through philanthropy, advocacy, and outreach. It envisions to create a community where all people are engaged and involved, literate and empowered to fully participate in our society in ways that will create efficient and sustainable progress.
“The money we raise shall be well spent making physical improvements to the Children’s Library, expanding its book collection while offering enhancement programs for the children,” said Wallace. (Photos from Google.com)
